All Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group

Independent Retailers ConfederationAt the request of both the small retailer sector and a number of interested MPs and Peers, the All Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group (APPSSG) was established in 2003 under the chairmanship of Jim Dowd MP.

The current Chairman of the APPSSG is David Amess, Conservative MP for Southend West.

The highlight of the APPSSG's recent work has been a public inquiry into the retail sector and a subsequent report, 'High Street Britain: 2015'. This report and the subsequent political debate set the background for the announcement of the Competition Commission inquiry into the UK Groceries Market, focusing on supermarket practices. The final report of the Competition Commission's inquiry was published on 30 April 2008 and further information can be viewed here.

"The report has played a key role in galvanising public and political opinion… and also succeeded in portraying this battle as a David and Goliath conflict."
The Times, 10 March 2006
